Starting a Business - Success Begins in Your Head

If you've ever thought about starting your own small business, you may be only too aware of some of the potential roadblocks. Some of the more common reasons people hold off on starting their own small enterprise is lack of finances, lack of experience, and lack of belief in their abilities.

While finances and experience are certainly realistic roadblocks that, although can be overcome, are real and can be formidable, the third roadblock I want to talk about is lack of belief in yourself.

More than anything, this is probably the number one reason that people hold off starting that business. It's the main reason the majority of the population remain employees and not employers.

If you don't believe in yourself, the world can be a scary place. Instead of seeing abundance and opportunity, we see scarcity and risk. It's really a “glass half full” mentality.

As an entrepreneur, having a positive mindset is critical. The majority of would be entrepreneurs have already defeated themselves mentally before taking the first step. They are stepping up to the plate and, in their mind, they've already struck out. This mental attitude can manifest itself, quite easily, into your everyday life.

Having confidence and self-esteem is a very complex thing. As human beings, we are all different and, hence, no two people are going to have exactly the same outlook on life. Whether you believe that we are born with such traits, or they are a result of our environment, it's realistic to expect that you can't completely change a person's style, personality, and core being.

However, there is much to be said for training oneself to expect rewards rather than disappointments. And this even applies to those of us who are relatively negative. People can change - results can be achieved.

So the next time you get caught up in over analyzing a situation and thinking of what can go wrong; start thinking about what can go right and the moves you need to make in order to make it successful. Don't dwell on the negative because it's not real until it actually happens.
